What Is Vision Therapy?
Vision therapy is…
- a progressive program of improving vision and overall health.
- performed under doctor supervision.
- individualized to fit the visual needs of each patient generally conducted in-office, in once or twice weekly sessions of 30 minutes to an hour.
- sometimes supplemented with procedures done at home between office visits.
- helping patients develop or improve fundamental visual skills and abilities.
- improving visual comfort, ease, and efficiency
- changing how a patient processes or interprets visual information.
- assessing gross and fine motor control abilities.
- evaluating nutrition habits.
- looking beyond the eyes of the patient and evaluating the entire body.
Many types of specialized equipment can be used in a Vision Therapy program, such as:
- therapeutic lenses
- prisms
- color filters
- electronic targets with timing mechanisms
- computer software
- balance boards
The first step in any Vision Therapy program is a comprehensive vision examination. Following a thorough evaluation and detailed patient history, a personalized patient program will be developed. Depending upon individual patients, a detoxification period may need to precede the personalized program. It is always recommended to continue tasks at home (home therapy) to maintain continuity and reinforcement.
